Overlapping journals with words "Today I am grateful"

Become a Positive and Happier Person

One of the biggest changes I have made in my life has resulted in making me a more positive and happier person. Each morning, after serving myself a much-needed cup of coffee, I make my way to the living room, cuddle on the coach under a warm blanket, and spend two to five minutes silently giving thanks for all of the blessings and abundance in my life. Whether it’s giving thanks for the trees and birds outside my window, for the roof over my head, for the family and friends that surround me, or for my strong and capable mind and body, I give thanks for things I value most.

“Gratitude is something that can be learned, practiced and developed, yielding a sense of well-being, optimism and happiness. Focus on being thankful for the things you have, rather than being bitter about what you don’t have. If you do this, you will start your morning off on a positive note and this sets the standard for a positive day.” – Dale Archer, MD

Even if you only take thirty seconds each morning to focus on the things you are grateful for, you will reap the benefits the entire day. Thirty seconds. That’s all it really takes to shift your mindset and start your day on a positive note.

For me, this simple act has made a world of difference. Regardless of what the day ahead has in store for me, my mind and soul receive an early morning boost—almost like a shot of expresso—that excites me to focus on the good in my life.

Does this mean that I don’t have bad days? Of course not. I still have them. But even when faced with challenges, I make a conscious choice to look at the situation from a place of gratitude.

An exhausting late night in the office: I’m so grateful for my career and the financial abundance it brings.

A flat tire on the way to an appointment: I’m grateful for my safety, for AAA, and for having a cell phone to reschedule my appointment.

Give it a try:

Start with thirty seconds today to focus on three things you are grateful for and silently give thanks. It’s as easy as “Thank you for (fill in the blank).” Tomorrow morning focus on four things you are grateful for. Each morning add one extra thing to your list until you get in the habit of spending at least two minutes each morning silently giving thanks.

You will soon find that you have so much to be grateful for.

I promise that you will feel positive and happier, which will then radiate these emotions to others.
