Create Balance in Your Work and Family Life

Numerous studies show that when people spend timing making all areas of their life as balanced as possible, each of those areas start to thrive and their overall happiness increases. The key to living a balanced life is to give each area within it equal attention - without feeling guilty about it. Enclosed are a few ways you can do just that.

  • At home, get organized the night before your workday: lay out the next day’s clothes, pack the lunches, and know what’s coming up on the agenda tomorrow.
  • Keep a clean environment in both your home and workspaces: if the areas around you are cluttered, it’s easier to lose items and more difficult to stay focused on your tasks.
  • Instead of trying to store information in your head, create a family calendar that includes everything from events and birthdays to chores, soccer practice, bill due dates, etc., and then set aside a few minutes the night before your work week begins to look it over, so that you know what’s coming.
  • At work, get the tough projects out of the way first and be realistic about what you can get done in a day. If it’s not an emergency, put it aside for another time.
  • Try not to bring your work home with you, but if you really feel you have to then wait until the kids are in bed and you’ve taken care of yourself before you pull it out or start checking emails.
  • After your children go to sleep, spend quality time with your partner – if you have one – or get in some self-care, like yin yoga, a warm bath, watch a movie, paint your toenails, call a friend, read a book, or meditate.
  • During your free time, schedule fun activities or volunteer projects with your family, partner, and friends.

No matter what, make time for daily exercise. It’s invaluable for your body, mind, spirit, and overall happiness.
