The Powerful Impact of Wellness

By now, we all know that wellness is an important part of our lives, but sometimes we avoid creating a daily regime for it because it seems like a hard task to tackle. We spoke with Dr. Saundra Jain about just that when she joined us on the Broke to Badass Masterclass series.

An Adjunct Clinical Affiliate for the School of Nursing at The University of Texas, Austin and the co-founder of WILD 5 Wellness, Dr. Jain reminded us that while wellness is important, we need to be kind to ourselves because perfection is not the goal.

Dr. Jain’s other recommendations included:

Start Small
When starting a wellness enhancing routine, not everyone is ready to engage in a 30-day wellness program right off the bat. When you are ready to get started, start small. Pick one or two wellness enhancing practices that you’re comfortable with and where you really feel like you can be successful. As you build your confidence, you can add more wellness enhancing practices.

Don’t Give Up
Many of us start a wellness practice super motivated, but find that our motivation often starts to tank or we start talking ourselves out of doing the work that’s required by saying things like, “it’s just too hard” or “I don’t have the time.” To avoid this barrier, before you start any kind of wellness enhancing program practice, ask yourself these questions:

  • Why do I want to do this?
  • Why do I want to engage in this type of practice?
  • What am I willing to give up to achieve my goals?

Making lifestyle changes is not easy. It takes effort, dedication, and a willingness to make changes to the current routine. If you ask yourself these questions before you start a wellness practice, you will have a better foundation to proactively deal with barriers.

Be Kind to Yourself
Most importantly, be kind to yourself as you begin making these changes. Keep in mind that perfection is not the goal of any wellness program. Change is never easy, so try not to be too hard on yourself. If you forget a day of practice or life takes over and you see yourself faltering, simply shake it off, acknowledge what happened, and start fresh the next day. Always remember that perfection is not the goal because it’s simply unattainable.
