The One Thing to Do in Breckenridge When It’s Not Snowing

The adorable town of Breckenridge, Colorado, or Breck as it’s called by the locals, is a beautiful place to visit whether or not it’s snowing. Its clean mountain air, relaxing vibe, and beautiful scenery are perfect to visit any time of year.

If you find yourself in Breckenridge before/after the snow season and are unable to hit the ski slopes, the number one thing to do is go horseback riding at Platte Ranch.

Platte Ranch Double B Riding Stables

Located in the quaint town of Fairplay, just 30 miles (about a 45-minute drive) from Breckenridge, Platt Ranch Double B Riding Stables is a true working ranch situated along 8,000 acres of beautiful countryside that includes aspen groves, a pine forest, and a river. Platt Ranch specializes in small group horseback riding experiences, where the staff encourages open range riding, allowing guests to ride alongside one another versus the standard nose to tail riding (where guests ride in a single file line). Platte Ranch offers true “Old West” horseback rides for anyone from beginners to experts; the amazing staff does a great job of pairing horses with riders based on the guest’s level of comfort.

Platte Ranch offers two-hour and half-day (four-hour) riding experiences. The two-hour option is an easy ride that allows guests to enjoy the scenery while exercising the beautiful horses. The half-day ride gives guests a more intimate experience, which starts by getting to know the horses, assisting with livestock, and partaking in the attractive landscape. Jesse and I participated in the two-hour ride and as it was coming to an end we both wished we would have done the four-hour ride instead. Next time!

Platte Ranch offers an unforgettable experience that left us in awe of the picturesque countryside and made us fall in love with majestic animals. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves the outdoors or going on new adventures.

To learn more or to make reservations, call (719) 836-1670. You will be prompted to leave a message and calls are returned in a very timely manner. Platte Ranch accepts cash or checks only.

Getting to Platte Ranch

Getting to Platte Ranch from Breckenridge requires driving through the quaint little towns of Alma and Fairplay in the South Park region of Colorado—yes, the same South Park from the famous cartoon series. Along the drive, you can stop at The Salt Licking Goat Clothing Company for a photo op with some of your favorite South Park characters.

A Few Other Tips

If you are looking for places to eat in Breckenridge, two of our favorite restaurants were:

Twist – Offering American comfort food with an upscale flare, Twist features an amazing food, beer, and wine menu in a cozy home setting. Some of our favorite dishes were the Duck Confit Poutine (a must!), the Maple Grilled Pork Chops, and the Herb Grilled Sirloin Tip Steak. So delicious!

Crepes a La Carte: Whether you are looking for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or dessert, Crepes a La Carte offers a great selection of sweet or savory crepes. Not just any old crepes, these are some of the best crepes I have ever tasted. In fact, they are so good that during the peak season folks choose to wait in line for over an hour just to place an order. I was lucky enough to walk by one morning when there was no line, stopped in, and devoured The Garden Breckfast crepe (see what they did there?). I never enjoyed a crepe as much as I did that one. I cannot wait to go back!

Wishing you peace, love, and adventure,

Jen
