Mental blocks often come from unconscious survival patterning, otherwise known as core beliefs and identity patterning. A core belief is not something you may even recognize as a belief, but rather as truth, i.e. you have to work hard to make money. These types of beliefs filter our experiences.
We invited Michelle Masters, international bestselling author and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) trainer, on the From Broke to Badass Masterclass series to explain how to identify our core beliefs, so we can work on getting rid of them.
There’s a part of your brain called the reticular activating system, which is designed to look for what it’s already focused on and screen out everything else. For example, let’s say you’re thinking about buying a new car and you specifically want a red jeep. Once you have this thought in your mind, you will start to notice red jeeps everywhere. That means one of two things: 1) either overnight everybody else in your town decided to buy a red jeep or 2) all of a sudden, your brain is programmed to see red jeeps when it wasn’t seeing them before. That’s a change in the filter system that affects your experiences.
Our reticular activating system predominantly uses our beliefs as filters. If you believe that there’s not much money available to you, your brain filters out everything that contradicts this belief and only allows in what agrees with this belief. When you change what your system is allowing in and filtering out, your life dramatically changes.
To identify your unconscious blocks and get unstruck, take a good look at your life and what typically happens. If you’re having issues with money, ask yourself: Is money easy to come by? Do you get paid well for doing stuff you like? Does money come and then leave immediately? Do you have to struggle and work hard to make it?
Whatever consistent experiences you come across are likely your core beliefs. The simplest way to become aware of what you believe is to look at what keeps happening in your life.
Your unconscious thoughts and patterns have a big impact on your current life and situation. The first step to clearing your unconscious blocks is to understand what you want, pay attention to your experiences, and focus on how you feel.
